After Years of Struggle, Our Child’s Tics Finally Disappeared

Laura, Mother of 6-Year-Old Marta Story

From the time Marta was 2 years old, she began experiencing tics. Doctors who examined the situation concluded that Marta was completely normal in every way—a happy, lively, and sociable child. They shrugged their shoulders and gave us hope that perhaps she would grow out of it by her teenage years.

We carried on with our lives as best we could. However, Marta continued to be troubled by serious problems. She could no longer walk normally or hold a glass in her hand. She would walk by taking a couple of steps and then jumping backwards. This movement automatically straightened her knees and caused her pain. Additionally, she had facial tics and made involuntary movements with her hands, which often disturbed people in public.

This, in turn, greatly affected Marta. She never did these things deliberately. Marta also had compulsive words that caused discomfort, and from time to time she would start squeaking. All of this exhausted both Marta and my husband and me. Finally, my husband said he couldn’t cope anymore and started searching the internet for options. Through our searches, we came across MER Biofeedback® therapy and decided to give it a try.

After Marta’s first MER Biofeedback® therapy session, she experienced a healing crisis. Fortunately, the therapist warned us that this might happen, and we were prepared for it. During the crisis, her tics intensified, but looking back now, we can say that it was part of the healing process.

Our experience wasn’t quick, but the improvement has been significant and life-changing.

To date, we’ve attended therapy four times in total, and Marta no longer jumps when walking, can hold a glass in her hand, her hands no longer make compulsive movements, and the unpleasant compulsive utterances and sounds have disappeared. All the tics gradually decreased until they disappeared completely.

Now we notice that the tics return when Marta is tired. Even then, only the facial and head twitches come back, sometimes the squeaking—nothing as extreme as before.

At other times, everything is completely normal, and there are no more tics. She’s now able to notice this herself and draw our attention to it. She sometimes says, “Mummy, I’m tired, I’ve already got tics.” Then we do something calming and go to bed.

Without the tics, Marta is much more confident and copes brilliantly with herself. She also enjoys attending therapy.

Despite the fact that my husband is a true sceptic, it was he who accidentally found this most suitable therapy that helped us. We are very grateful and recommend MER Biofeedback® therapy to anyone whose family members experience tics or Tourette’s.
