The Concept of Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) was popularised by Daniel Goleman in his
1995 publication, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.
Goleman described emotional intelligence as consisting of five key components:
Self-awareness: Recognising one’s moods and emotions and understanding their effect on others.
Self-regulation: Using emotional awareness to prevent moods or emotions from triggering impulsive behaviour.
Motivation: Taking action or making decisions driven by an inner purpose or values (rather than immediate rewards such as monetary gain). This drive may stem from optimism, curiosity, ambition, or personal ideals.
Empathy: Understanding the emotions of others and using this insight to respond appropriately to their emotional state.
Social skills: Applying emotional intelligence to build strong relationships and navigate interactions effectively.
Here are two examples of social skills associated with high emotional intelligence:
Active listening: A person with high emotional intelligence listens attentively and empathetically, making others feel heard and understood.
Conflict resolution: They are skilled at resolving conflicts by addressing underlying emotions and finding solutions that benefit all parties.
Common Barriers to Emotional Intelligence
Negative thought patterns and emotions.
Limiting beliefs shaped by past experiences.
Why is Emotional Intelligence Important?
People can use emotional intelligence to improve mental health, reach goals, and develop fulfilling relationships.
According to a 2018 report of North Americans, people with a high EQ are 8 times as likely to have a high quality of life as those with lower scores. A higher EQ can improve lifelong physical and mental health even more than academic ability.
Research also suggests EQ is more important than IQ for succeeding in the workplace. Employees with high EQ are more likely to display leadership skills and high business performance. Managers with a high EQ are more likely to retain employees long-term.

MER Biofeedback® Therapy also helps you better understand the feelings and perspectives of others. This heightened empathy improves your ability to connect, communicate, and collaborate with people.
- Improving Motivation
The therapy balances emotional blocks such as fear, anxiety, or self-doubt, allowing you to tap into your inner drive. With reduced negative emotions, you’ll find it easier to stay motivated and focused on achieving your goals.
- Strengthening Social Skills
By balancing negative thoughts, emotions, and limiting beliefs, MER Biofeedback® Therapy helps you navigate social interactions with greater ease and confidence. You’ll develop stronger communication skills and the ability to resolve conflicts constructively.
- Building Emotional Resilience
The therapy helps balance or release unresolved emotions, making it easier to adapt to stress and challenges. This resilience is a key component of emotional intelligence and overall well-being.
Do I need to talk about myself during an MER Biofeedback® therapy session?
MER Biofeedback® therapy represents an unique therapeutic intervention where, unlike most types of therapy, the therapist discusses the client’s stress indicators, rather than the client themselves.
To the therapist, the client resembles a ‘puzzle’ that gradually unfolds. By testing stress indicators, the therapist discerns which stressors require balancing.
Consequently, the client is not required to recall or describe negative life events during the session. This therapeutic approach does not necessitate the therapist asking questions or mapping out past events.
Therefore, if preferred, the client does not need to speak about anything during the session.
Is MER Biofeedback® therapy safe?
MER Biofeedback® therapy using the device is a safe, non-invasive, and non-manipulative method with no negative side effects.
